Since being implemented in 2009, there have been more than 200 allies that have joined the “Safe Zone” movement at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. More than 200 allies are a part of the Safe Zone program, which was implemented in 2009. In addition, a LGBT organization known as the Gay Student Alliance, composed of 35 members, was formed.

During the past academic year, the Gay Student Alliance spent their time bringing awareness about the LGBT population at UNCP on campus, shared Jonathan Woods, the president of the student organization. Their first Pride Week was held in the Spring semester. “Our goal is to help create an open environment for LGBT students and raise awareness about issues that we face,” said Woods, a rising sophomore. “We are not here to change anyone’s opinions or beliefs.”
