Minimizing the Gap that Exists Among Gender and Diversity in the Tech Sector

Something major is about to take place on the UCLA campus. It will be occupied by more than 300 leaders from different fields such as technology, innovators, policymakers, journalists and academics. The meeting will be taking place at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion Club where these profession will gather to speak on minimizing the gap that exists among gender and diversity in the tech sector. Among the speakers attending the Advancing Women Tech Conference will be BuzzFeed and the Huffington Post founder Jonah Peretti, the head person of Uber Labs Charlene Wu, the advisor of Eric Garcetti, Jeanne Holm, and senior executives from Google, Box Sony, Cisco, NBC Entertainment, Warner Bros., Atom Factory, the U.S. Economic Development Agency and the Los Angeles Business Journal, and the list goes on…

Another speaker to expected to speak will be the Dean Jayathi Murthy herself, who made history by becoming the first woman to run UCLA’s Henry Samueli of Engineering and Applied Science at the beginning of last year, January.

 “I’m looking forward to participating in the conversation as i think we’re approaching a turning point in the long-term issue of increasing the number of women working in the technology sector…the next steps are critical if we want to see improvements.”

The UCLA office of Information Technology will be hosting the second annual conference under the UCLA Women In Tech Initiative.

Below, you will find some of the questions Dean Murthy answered from both organizers Davida Johnson and Stefanie Pietkiewicz concerning her personal connection to the issue at hand and how UCLA Engineering is aiming to solidify their diversity program.

What was your own personal motivation for choosing engineering as a major in college and as a career?

My father is a civil engineer, and I saw as a child how much good he was able to do in the world. He graduated from engineering school soon after India obtained independence and spent the early part of his career building roads and bridges in some of the most remote and poor places in India. I saw how much of a difference that made, and how much respect he was held in. My admiration for my father translated into an admiration for engineering. Of course, I also loved the idea of doing something that girls didn’t normally do — breaking rules always had a big appeal for me. When I started going to engineering school myself, I found it fun and rewarding, and so a career in the field was natural.

Have you experienced any challenges as a female engineer?

Yes, of course. I was among the first handful of female engineers to graduate from IIT Kanpur in India, and there were naturally big challenges to do with that — people hadn’t really thought through what it meant to admit young women into an all-male institution.  And if you are first at age 15, you’re first at age 50. So I’ve been first pretty much every step of the way. That means figuring out how to achieve your goals your own way, because there aren’t too many people around who have experienced what you are encountering.

What advice would you give to female students who want to pursue a successful career in tech, given the lack of female representation in technology companies?

Tech and engineering are terrific careers — that’s why we’re trying to increase the number of women in UCLA Engineering. An engineering career is creative, fun, lucrative and, ultimately, deeply important to society. So it is worth the fight. And things are getting better, though too slowly for some of us.

How is UCLA Engineering striving to ensure diversity in its program? Do you think we are making progress?

Our statistics are roughly on par with the other top public engineering schools, but none of us are nearly good enough. For example, last year 23 percent of UCLA engineering undergraduates were women, which is okay, but we are going to do much better.

One of the things we are going to kick off is a Women in Engineering program to focus on significantly increasing the number of women across the board — in our undergraduate and graduate programs and among our faculty. We have improved our numbers over the last decade, but I hope to change the rate of increase.

There are varying opinions on how to address the gender gap in technology. What strategies have you seen, experienced or executed that work best?

I’ve taken a pretty focused approach. At my old job, as department chair of mechanical engineering at University of Texas, Austin, I kicked off a program called 35-in-5, an explicit program to get to 35% women in the incoming class in five years. This meant looking hard at freshman admissions, understanding which high schools our female students came from, working on converting admits to acceptances, using our network of alumni, among other strategies. We were quite successful, going up some 6 percentage points in two to three years. And we worked hard on retention by embedding women students in research groups to give them a community to work in, among other things.

At UCLA, I hope to work across the entire pipeline, from admissions to retention to graduation and, ultimately, persistence and success in employment. I hope to form an ecosystem of female engineers in Southern California connected to UCLA who can help each other. We are just now thinking through this program, and you’ll be hearing about it soon.

What do you hope this upcoming conference will achieve?

I hope we come to a better understanding of the drivers that bring women to engineering and those that drive them away. And from this, I hope we can formulate successful strategies to significantly move our numbers.

It’s always wonderful to see those fighting for a world where we can all be recognized, not by gender or race, but by our capabilities as human beings. As this mission to expand continues, let us value more the possibilities that present itself and most excitingly, those to come. #Rewordit!

I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering in the university, and the most amazing thing is that in the history of my school there have only been one or no female student in Mechanical Engineering Department. But things are changing now, more females are getting involved in the Technology-driven profession. In my class we have just one female and she’s indeed challenging us the guys. She has been able to go through all the stresses involved in studying courses like Mechanics of Machines, Strength of Engineering Materials, Mechanical Engineering Design, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Mechatronics, Materials & Metallurgical Engineering, etc. It is indeed amazing to see her cope with both the mental & physical stresses, both in the classroom and in the workshop & laboratories.

    This is the era where women take up the challenge and join the men in bringing about Technological Innovations that will make the world a better place.
    This is the era of EXTREME ENGINEERING!
    And FEMALES must not be left out!!!

    • It’s always amazing to see the women that sit in my classes as a male civil engineering student. I think this is a result of what society has said a man should do and what the women have accepted. As powerful beings, I believe having more women in the field will add tremendous value because of the toughness they have. I’ve not only read of them, but I’ve also had the opportunity to see them.     • Frank, the crazy thing about it is that, I initially thought that they should be given a chance, but had a change of heart. I really don’t think they should be given a chance. I believe that by allowing them the same rights and privileges as us men, we will be more privileged to work beside them. All we have to do is recognize and acknowledge their strengths, along with the value they will ad working alongside us.

      • Wow. That is very honorable of you to say Giovanni!. I know very few women in that field, but the few that I know experience so much pressure and work so very hard to prove that they belong in this male dominated industry as stated. I don’t know when we will experience true equality in this world, but I know if we keep fighting for it, we’ll experience more than we could ever imagine.

  2. Lol… @ Nathalie.
    I think it’s natural that women aren’t totally given that equality with their male counterparts. That was how God made the female to be, so the truth cannot be questioned.
    But with modern day civilization, things are being altered. Hence the need for gender equality, and I’m in support of that.
    In the Engineering Profession, men need to have confidence in the ability of their female counterparts. That is the only way a male engineer can totally leave a job for a female engineer to handle. If he doesn’t believe in her that she’ll be able to handle it, both physically and mentally, he’ll need to guide her through the job.
    Also, due to the female’s ‘power-to-control’, the male engineers usually feel the need to always get them carried along. That way, they become part of the job all along and hence, take full part in bringing about innovative technologies that’ll make the world a better place.
