It is a general tendency that whenever we come in contact with successful individuals that either be placed on the Forbes list as the richest man or anywhere else in the news, the first thing that we say is, ‘How lucky.’ We may even start feeling a little envious over their achievements. But, do you really feel that whatever you or others are is just because of luck? Things like hard work, dedication, struggle or perseverance, do they not play a role in an individual’s success? If you really think that way, then there is no doubt that this story of Li Ka-Shing will definitely change your look out.
Today we all know him as the richest man in Asia, and eighth richest person in the world. He is the world’s largest operator of container terminals and the world’s largest health and beauty retailer. But do you know about all the hardships that he has seen in his childhood?
He was just fifteen when his father died of tuberculosis. He then had to quit school to work to support his family. He started to sell watches in the store of his uncle. He proved to be a capable salesman and started his own plastic factory in 1950 in Hong Kong. By 1958, he had a flourishing business manufacturing plastic flowers and was ready to expand. He named the firm Cheung Kong Industries.
The company grew rapidly, expanding into real estate and eventually being listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 1972. Li expanded his ownership of different companies and today has his hand in cellular phones, banking, satellite televisions, retail outlets, cement productions, airports, domestic transportation, hotels, electric power, ports and shipping, steel production as well as investing in cool apps among other industries.
Li provides a lesson in adaptability and integrity. Through hard work and a reputation for remaining true to his internal moral compass, he was able to build such a massive business empire. He values his reputation, trustworthy in keeping his words, being scrupulously fair to his partners and good to his employees.
There is a very famous quote by Li Ka-Shing, “The future may be made up of many factors, but where it truly lies is in the hearts and minds of men. Your dedication should not be confined for your own gain, but unleashes your passion for our beloved country as well as for the integrity and humanity of mankind.”
Ka-Shing is also known as generous philanthropist. In 2006, he pledged to donate 1/3rd of his fortune to philanthropic projects and charity throughout the world. To date Li has given away well over US $1 billion in philanthropy via his Li Ka-Shing Foundation and various other charitable trusts. Today he is an inspiration to many who want to achieve heights, but get demotivated due to their present conditions or all the hardships that come in between their way.
