Facing rejections is a normal thing with a man who wants to succeed, though it’s important to know your course. Malanie Perkins helped build a 1$ billion company, but she didn’t start there. She started her business quest at the tender age of 14. Melanie Perkins used to go around her hometown of Perth, Australia, selling designs and handmade scarfs.

At the age of 22, she formed a company called Fusion Books, described in designing year books, an online system. Today it is the largest publisher company in Australia and outskirts of France and New Zealand.
There was a platform in 2013 Melanie launched, a canva that allowed to expose the expertise of different people from design professionalism to non-professionalism qualities. This Canva has boasted over 10 Million registered members from 190 different countries. It’s a lingual platform with over three million images. With 250 employees, the company was valued at $ one billion at the beginning of 2018.
It was a totally hard journey for Melanie to withstand till this moment.
Melanie commences her morning by reviewing a Canva’s social media channels for updates about the community, what’s upto and what’s needs to be addressed.
It has been hard for her to end up a day before making extra effort, tracking herself with a physical calendar and marking the days she have to rest.
On getting online experiences and socialization, she kept reading encouragement books e.g. Designing the Obvious by Robert Hoekman, which made her instinctual and encouraged.
Perkins explains on qualities of being a smart and perfect leader, which entails being impartial, and honest in decision making. Growing from one single and small office to two big offices with over 200 people in Sydney and Manila needs positive working skills, she says.
The daily routine is managed by the team members over the week, and on Fridays the members come up together to share their views and knowledge, and strengthen themselves to partake their duties effectively. Evolving to Canva business was not just a profession, but inspiration, a hobby, a commitment and I applied knowledge and skills to some instances, as it was in the blood and I knew this was my career, since the age of 14, she says.

She learnt on how to induce fear from rejections, remaining persistent and focusing on her goals in life. As a group, they stayed intact even when their clients had tough questions for them, they tackled the situation firmly while focused, went through their pitch deck over and over to avoid the same mess again.
After meeting Lars Rasmussen, Google Maps co-founder, her instincts started widening even more and more, as she leant that prominent business people were just as normal as obvious human. This completely changed the dimension of her vision for Canva. He helped her find the right tech team including tech co-founder, the CPO, Cameroon Adams, ex-Google and as well as CTO, Dave Hearden.
Travelling to places like India gave Melanie hopes as she was warmed welcomed, changing her perception about life.
Getting inspired from the neighboring communities gave the team hopes and inspirations, e.g. a person from neighborhood broadcasting a Canva design without design training on digital billboard was amazing.
The first business idea was simplifying the process of design in Fusion Books, a tool in online design, meant for school year book design.
Drawing wire-frames for fusion books by hiring a software engineer was an achievement. Was like a magic for it being truthful, and the company bootstrapped, from the living room of my home.
Managing priorities was our rule. Profitability was to be quick or else no company.
The creation comes from your mind, not from other users. From the design class, a particular student had to struggle to get what I was teaching, took months tutoring them, this is where the idea of Canva crossed my mind. Taking time and using the tools used in design for tutoring this students was the insight I gained.
As a startup founder, incredible advices are their to face, but its up to you to assess positive advices that will build you and continue with your goals.
We live by tips we swear. We’ve got to make them real and doable. This worked out on our Canva project. Its challenging but you keep your pace and dream even bigger.
A canva is a user friendly toolkit that is affordable and allows the users to design anything and publish it anywhere.
Business is what you keep doing repeatedly again and again, in perseverance and hard work, as for Melanie working at her tender age selling handmade scarves, then to Fusion Book at 19, upto where she is now, Canvas is not a joke. She’s humbled and passionate in all these.
Melanie Parkins like travelling around once out of University, India, Africa, South Asia, to explore more. Most importantly, she enjoys working with friendly and motivating groups in her company with big dreams and great plans to come. #Rewordit
